Following the demise of The San Francisco Oracle, some of the staffers of that quintessential flower power tabloid got together and produced a new magazine called Changes Almanac. The second and third issues were just called Changes. It resembled the Oracle in design, tone and subject matter, but the vibe was country, not urban. The love children had turned away from the drug-ridden Haight and had fixed their gaze on the northern woodlands of Mendocino and Humboldt Counties. The cover artists of Changes #3 handle this theme in different ways. Rick Griffin's front cover gives it a sci-fi treatment, and Victor Moscoso's back cover is a decorative arrangement of fish, birds and sunshine. The Griffin cover has never been printed elsewhere in color, as far as I know. The inside back cover by R. Crumb is his famous picture of Mr. Natural on a tractor saying "Twas Ever Thus." It was later made into a poster, but it was drawn for this magazine and this was its first appearance in print. Also in this issue are cartoonists Jack Jaxon, Gilbert Shelton, Spain, George Metzger and Rory Hayes, as well as poster artists Alton Kelley and Bob Fried. Poet Gary Snyder contributed his Smokey the Bear Sutra ("DROWN THEIR BUTTS CRUSH THEIR BUTTS").
