About

Hohlwein, Ludwig (1874-1949)

Hohlwein is widely regarded as the greatest German poster artist of all time. Prolific, and with a style immediately recognizable, he created posters from before WWI through WWII.

His reputation was significantly sullied by his work for the Nazis, for whom he did many posters, but no one denies his greatness, nor his place as one of the premier artists of poster history.

His WWI posters include some of the most reproduced and respected war/political posters of any era. His two most famous images of this era are the Volksspende fur die Deutschen Kriegs-Und Zivil-Gefangenen (people's fund for German political and war prisoners) and his Ludendorff-Spende fur Kriegsbeschadigte (Ludendorff fund for soldiers injured in the war)

Before WWI and between the wars he produced numerous classics in many genres: travel, clothing stores chocolates etc.
