About

Avenia, Sergio

Sergio was in Jeff Ament's first band, Deranged Diction. He passed away March 5, 2013. His words from his DeviantArt site:

I was born in Tokyo in 1964. No, my parents weren't in the Military… they were in show business. My mother was a showgirl and my father was a choreographer. Unfortunately, we left when I was two and I have no recollection of Japan. We bounced around a bit and landed finally in Las Vegas. This is where my consciousness begins. My earliest recollections are of back stage and being surrounded by leggy dancers and lecherous comedians. Sometimes I would even get to watch the bawdy goings on from the light booth, gawking with glee while nursing my Shirley Temple. In between shows and school there was incessant television - where I absorbed a steady diet of cartoons, horror movies on old TV shows. Mixed with a plethora of comic books, film magazines and old issues of Mad - these where the things my dreams were made of.

The school age years were the usual board doodles which brought amusement to myself and the other classmates andbrought forth the ire of the teachers. The first time I ever heard the word "pornography" was from my second grade principle. He said, while holding up one of my latest masterpieces that had just landed me in his office… "Mr. Avenia... this is pornography! And there will be no drawing of it in my school"!

By my teens, I found myself living in Montana. All I would do for the next four years would be to plot my escape. Back to the big city, that's where I wanted to be! I dropped out of school and taught myself to play drums. I knocked around with a couple of lounge bands until I made the acquaintance of some of the local punk rockers. I joined Deranged Diction, and after a while, my band mates and I made our way to Seattle. Seattle in the early 80s was fantastic! It was everything I wanted. At that time, the town was in a serious economic funk and you could pretty much run amuck there. The waterfront was nothing but old dives. Bars, pool halls, porno shops and strip clubs. Winos, sailors, longshoreman and hookers… I was in heaven! The punk scene was vibrant, and music venues were everywhere. I kept busy playing gigs and getting wasted.

The following many years are a massive blur of convoluted, life wasting chaos, bad decisions and disastrous mistakes. So I won't go into detail.

I finally made it to New York in 1999 and it was there that I started picking up a pen again. I managed a titty bar in Manhattan at night and sold porn videos out of an office in Queens by day. I would eventually drive a cab for several years after that. The imagery and bombardment of gut spilling humanity I got exposed to living in and driving a cab in New York City was overwhelming and inspirational.

I started drawing a comic strip series called Sheldon. Sheldon tells the story of a profoundly disfigured (armless, legless and blind) teenage boy, who against insurmountable odds, continues to forge ahead. He inhabits a 50s, ghetto netherworld, where cruelty and misfortune are the status quo. Regardless, Sheldon remains the hopeless romantic, even though his adolescent lust may get the better of him sometimes. You can dig Sheldon on my Facebook or Myspace pages.

I started drawing the black and white, fine line stuff. This is pretty much me spilling mental vomit out on a piece of paper. These works are, well I don't know. Make what you will of them.

I've been steadily working on various mediums since then. Tattoos and tattoo flash. Some painting and some pin up. Poster work for Deranged Diction and Pearl Jam. Currently I am doing interior illustration and cartoons for Bachelor Pad magazine.
