President McKinley was shot at close range by an anarchist on September 6, 1901. He underwent surgery within hours after the attack and seemed to be recovering, but eight days later he passed away. Very detailed records were kept of his time in the hospital, including his last few hours of life:
September 13, 1901 ; 4:30 pm- Hypodermic of brandy. Chicken broth, 60 c.c.
4:40 pm- Hypodermic strychnine, 0.002 gm.
4:55 pm- Hypodermic Adrenalin. Brandy and water.
5:00 pm- gave oxygen. Urinated involuntarily. Pulse 125, respiration 40.
6:00 pm- Oxygen continued. Hypodermic whiskey and water. Hypodermic nitroglycerine. Hypodermic Brandy.
6:25 pm- No response to stimulants. Hypodermic morphine, 0.015 gm.
7:40 pm- Oxygen continued, almost pulseless. Morphine, 0.015 gm.
2:40 am (September 14, 1901)- Time of death.
