La Luz de Jesus Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of paintings by the legendary Neon Park. This is Park's third show at La Luz, and the first exhibition of his work since his untimely death of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 1993.
Neon Park first gained widespread public recognition when he painted one of the most infamous album covers of all time, the Mothers of Invention's 1970 release Weasels Ripped My Flesh. He went on to do covers and graphics for David Bowie, Dr. John, The Beach Boys and L.A.'s own Little Feat. His work has also appeared in Playboy, National Lampoon, Glass Eye and Dreamworks. Park's images resist easy categorization, combining pop, op psychedelia, surrealism and magical realism, always richly hued and always infused with the artist's subversive wit. Possibly the best description of his work is Park's own term for his style: Zen Voodoo. He and wife Chick Strand lived part of each year in L.A. and the rest of the time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. As time went by, Mexico's influence, especially that of the Huichol yarn paintings they collected, crept more and more into Park's work. In the 1980's, he developed the taping technique he would continue to explore for the rest of his life: he painted one image on a canvas, taped stripes on the canvas then painted a second image. Once the second image dried he and Strand would carefully peel away the tape. The result is a fascinating double exposure, a rich combination of two contrasting images, juxtaposing styles, subject matter and cultures.
In this show we present an overview of paintings from thoughout Park's career, including many pieces never before exhibited in public, and culminating with his final, gorgeous eight painting Isis series.
