Influenced by Depression-era art and the pulp magazines and lurid paperbacks of the 1930's, 40's and 50's, Owen Smiths' magnificent oil paintings explore the violent and sexual urges of man. Smith enhances the mood of his powerful figures with his use of deep, rich color and volumetric modeling. The artist's work has appeared in such publications as Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Time, and his paintings were featured on the cover of the past five New Yorker Special Fiction Issues. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, he is currently designing a mosaic mural for the New York City Subway System. This is Owen Smith's third show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery.
