Liberty 12-A engines were used to build D.H. 4s, the only American made airplane to get into Western front combat. Called "Flaming Coffins" because poorly constructed fuel systems made them easy targets for enemy bullets. Used for U.S. Mail after WW one. "You who build Liberty Motors - keep thinking of the man who is going to drive them…"
