John Severson published the first issue of SURFER magazine in 1960 to promote his third movie, Surf Fever -- and demands from the magazine eventually took him away from making surf films. But from 1958 to 1964, during the genre's first big boom, he made one movie a year.
In 1969 Severson came back and hired Rick Griffin to do the poster art for his last movie, Pacific Vibrations. Griffin had been a cartoonist at SURFER since 1961, and was best known among surfers as the creator of Murphy. Later, Griffin moved to San Francisco and did swirling, vibrant artwork for musicians like Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead and Santana. In '69 Griffin temporarily moved back to Southern California to work on the Pacific Vibrations poster.
