"This painting was done in the fall of 2001. I was inspired after re-reading Fritz Leiber's 'The Girl With The Hungry Eyes'. Betraying my original influence for this piece, I decided to fill the eyes with blackened shadow. The piece began to take on a tone of 'mourning' as I neared completion. Shortly thereafter, I decided to use this imagery on a concert poster for the band CLUTCH...specifically because it DIDN'T seem to 'fit' or 'make sense'. The woman in the painting is indeed carrying the weight of some unknown trial. In her melancholy and worn visage, her wild, red hair remind us that she is very much 'alive'" -JR
