Geisel came to realize this early in life, when in 1937 he began soliciting publishers for his first book. Most publishers found the book's non-traditional sense of fantasy and whimsy to be an insurmountable problem, and the young Dr. Seuss was turned down by 27 companies. No one, it seemed, was willing to make an unwise purchase. Finally, Mike McClintock, an old friend at Vanguard Press, read the manuscript and agreed it should be published. McClintock looked past the obvious and saw something magical in Seuss' story, a story he felt was a jewel among the more mundane children's books of his time. The rest, as they say, is history.
