From Chase Art:
"In Self-Portrait As A Young Man Shaving, Ted Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) takes a whimsical and wry look at the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Geisel's coming-of-age painting bursts with pride and self-adoration. His excitement comes alive in the work's varied color palette and explosive brush strokes; while the mirror, a shrine of Seussian detail, pokes fun at the vanity of teenage experiences. This work, painted in 1964, came on the heels of Geisel's wildly successful books The Cat In The Hat, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and in 1960, Green Eggs and Ham. Geisel approached this second coming-of-age, from well-known author to international phenomenon, with the same pride and youthful spirit depicted in Self-Portrait As A young Man Shaving. As such, Geisel's intimate self-portrait becomes more than a poignant teenage memory. This work offers a glimpse into his professional right-of-passage, and his unwavering determination to find the whimsy in life's most significant moments."
