He told me the film was inspired by his own relationship with his father. His Pinocchio is about what it means to be a good father, a bad father, and live in a world where fathers can learn to love you for who you are. At the heart of the film is the fusion, the dance of creation, between Geppetto and Pinocchio. I wanted to show Pinocchio stepping out into the world, literally leaping out of the picture frame, and Geppetto having difficulty letting go.
