Like Picasso’s Guernica, American Satire evokes the turmoil of the times and the more unforgiving side of humanity. According to Feldman, “I was painting over a few months, capturing snippets of the news. There was no event in particular that I recalled, it was the usual circus in the background and it kept going on and on. It might have been the last time I read the news. It inspired me to use a red and blue color palette and the name says the rest.”
American Satire captures the madness of warring parties in constant opposition, each with their take on the same events. The richness of the oil, the resilience of the acrylic, and the saturated pigment of the pastel capture the tension. The sharp energetic jabs exchanged by the deep blues and vivid reds, combined with the dark composition and canvas backdrop, provide the viewer a safe place to observe the circus unfold. It’s madness against reason. Passion is shown by colliding and intersecting color and shape in one neutral place, creating beauty, which is to be shared by opposing sides when viewed in this way. It is thought to be a reminder to all to come together and maintain an open mind.
