'I want to start by saying that I’ve had the honor in working with 311 for 7 years now. My first poster was for their show at Jones Beach on July 13, 2013. The opening act was Cypress Hill, one of my favorite SoCal groups. Being from New York, I was incredibly honored and excited to work on this piece. From that, the story of the Amber Girl came to be.
In the past 7 years, I’ve come to learn one incredible amazing fact. 311 is not just a band, they do not just put out albums and songs. 311 is much more, they are a community, they epitomize unity, and value family. I have met some wonderful people and made close life long friends. When I was asked to create an image that defined 311 and celebrates their 30 year accomplishment, my mind actually drew a blank!
I looked up their albums, festivals they were apart of, shows, and so on. I started sketching, and then it hit me. P-Nut, Tim, SA, Chad, and Nick, these guys are the start, the center, of the 311 universe, and you, the fans, the community, are the reason, everything that surrounds them. So I kept sketching and sketching. Let me tell you, I didn’t get it right the first time, or the second time. In actuality, I don’t know if it’s exactly right, but I loved creating this image. I listened to albums, reached out to friends in the community, went over sketches with the team, it was awesome. As bright as this community is, there have been the hardships. I don’t know that I captured that part, but I did want to pay tribute to those that have been there, smiled with you, sang with you, and loved. That aren’t here physically anymore, but will always be here inside.
This was about a 3-4 month process, and I enjoyed every minute of it. So to you, to the band, to my friends, thank you. I hope I created something that represents these last 30 years, and that you enjoy as much as I did creating.' - Maxx Gramajo
