'There’s something in the water in Michigan. Something in the air. It builds this fire inside people, compelling them to do strange and crazy things. Like start a rock band. It’s like some kind of Detroit tradition to make the loudest, most powerful noises with your friends – get that fire that’s inside of you OUTSIDE of you – and form a band. And that’s what these four friends do. They can’t help it, really. It’s summer time, and school is out, and that means they can spend all day in the garage practicing. They call themselves “The Voyagers”, and they’ve got all these songs about outer space and inner explorations that they’re hoping to put on an album someday.
Practice is over on this one night, and it’s time for the other three to get home. It’s the night after July 4th, and compared to the explosions of the night before, the neighborhood seems extra quiet as they ride their bikes home. But Joey can’t help feel like he hears something behind him. It’s probably just the wind. Or someone lighting off some left-over firecrackers. They’re still buzzing from that new song they’ve been working on, it’s called “Space and Time”, so his head is all over the place anyway. But that noise.... it’s still there, like it’s following them as they ride the empty streets. He stops to turn around, and there it is. “Uh, you guys...”
The street behind them is open. Wide open, like a portal to the universe. Ultraviolet and infrared rays streaking out into the night air, planets and stars orbiting, as if they’re light years away yet also somehow RIGHT THERE. And then it appears – a planet, or maybe it’s a star, or some kind of moon. Whatever it is, it’s positively vibrating with light and sound. It’s like it’s humming as it rises up....is that a melody it’s humming? No, it can’t be. It almost sounds like that song they were working on tonight............
