"I feel like I've always been a PLANET OF THE APES fan. But as late as 2013, I was one of those sad souls who knew everything about the movie (and could sing THE SIMPSONS musical number) but hadn't actually seen the original. I had seen the 2001 version with my dad. I saw RISE in 2011. I loved the scene in MAD MEN.
I finally saw the original the way it was always meant to be seen: streaming on a laptop, 20 minutes at a time, over lunch at home. I knew I would absolutely love it and I did.
BOOM! Studios contacted me about covers for an Ursus series in 2017, which was a great excuse to finally see BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. As I said to my editor at the time, I had mixed feelings about it, "... it was a little bat-shit crazy when it should've been more ape-shit." But I loved Ursus, and when it came time to draw him, I had a blast. It helped to have David F. Walker's plots, which really fleshed out the character for me.
Even better, I got to work with my dad, Joe Rivera, who inked the covers (and most of my work since 2011). He's the one that made me a fan of the series before I had even seen it."- Paolo Rivera
