"Rendlesham Forest is a vast plantation of conifers in East Anglia, UK. Lines of darkly needled trees stand silently; there are few roads, and fewer settlements, and it is a place renowned for sightings of unidentified flying objects. Its dark vastness hides the strange coast of that region, a low-lying land of marsh and shingle. Out there on the wave-torn coast is Orford Ness, a weird secret island brought into being by five centuries of longshore drift, five centuries of pebbles piling upon pebbles. Orford Ness was the inspiration for the letterpress book I recently made with Robert Macfarlane. Rendlesham Forest is the green guardian of Ness, the arboreal ramparts that hide Ness from the sight of the world."
