"There's a sense of motion in this piece, a suspended animation like something is about to burst, akin to waiting for, as the title indicates, the punchline to a joke. The painting is 6.5 x 5.5 feet, big and boisterous, with a tumult of mingling characters. In my current paintings I approach raw canvas with very fluid acrylic paint, and let it bleed and blur. I don't work from a sketch or any preplanned ideas at all, but rather let the ideas and paint flow in synergy. In this particular scene, the cowboy entered first. Then his companion, the Tomcat. Some figures here are from an inventory of recurring figures over the years in my work, like the cowboy, the soldier, the lovers. What I particularly love about the translation of the painting to the print is how the ink soaks into the textured paper, giving the feel and luminosity of a watercolor painting, echoing the acrylic stain soaking into the canvas in the original." -- Johnson
