Gouache on illustration board

"In the early years of youth, I found myself lost among an unending sea of rock and sand. With uncertain purpose I strove deep into the barrens, until finally, legs racked with fatigue, I tumbled down a dune the blinding sun had hidden in my path. When my tears finally cleared the sand from my eyes, I saw it. A beast of impossible design, yet seemingly familiar, standing in frozen gaze only feet from where I landed. It clutched an orb of brilliant color, with glittering sand pouring from inside, seeping into the salted earth below. We locked eyes, long enough for the shadows around us to shift, until finally the beast cooed, and set back to its unknown task. I watched, unspeaking, but the stillness of the place was broken as I heard my name called from beyond the dune. The beast looked to the sound of the unseen voice, and with a flick of its tail, vanished into the wind. The orb, which had been so gently cradled, began to crumble, its color fading as if bleached by the sun, and soon all that remained was a pile of lifeless stones. But though the land had seemed desolate
before, I noticed flowers of deep yellow shining under the midday sun, and I smiled as their scent filled my nose. My parents appeared and cradled me in worried arms, but though I could not describe what I had seen, I gave the beast a name, written in the hand of innocence, and promised I would see it once more."
