"Parody" by Jon Rose
4 Color Reduction Woodblock Print.
Gamblin Oil Based Inks.
Stonehenge White 100% Cotton Rag.
15" by 20.5".
Edition of 75 Signed and Numbered.
From Jon:
"This print is a humble homage to 3 artists, E.J. Sullivan, Alton Kelley, and Stanley Mouse. What came out of this collaboration back in the late 60's was one of the most iconic rock posters ever for the most ground breaking band of any era, The Grateful Dead.
This one goes out to the trailblazers who set the stage for so many others to follow in their wake, both musically & artistically.
I chose the illustration of Quatrain LXXIII from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the First Version translated by Edward Fitzgerald and illustrated by Edmund J. Sullivan. The same edition of the book that Kelley and Mouse sliced that legendary image out of in a San Francisco library to create their masterpiece. Having in mind the Spafford song Parody, this quatrain fit perfectly.
"Ah, Moon of my Delight, who know'st no wane,
The Moon of Heav'n is rising once again:
How oft hereafter rising shall she look
Through this same Garden after me—in vain!"
I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed making it. The proceeds from my personal Artist Edition copies will be donated to The Haight Street Art Center, which promotes advancement in poster art production, education related to poster art’s history and the cultural impact and a deep commitment to extending San Francisco’s proud heritage of publicly accessible artwork."
