"Pania of the Reef is a legendary protector of the reef in local Maori folklore and is believed to live in the waters off the coast of Napier, New Zealand. Earlier this year, I collaborated with PangeaSeed Foundation's Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans program and painted a large scale mural about Pania in Napier. Due to man-made climate concerns, specifically, the rising CO2 levels in our atmosphere, the acidity levels of our oceans have risen and continue to rise at alarming rates killing the planet's reefs and the delicate ecosystems around them. Pania is depicted floating defiant and hopeful over her baron reef despite the fact that she herself is dissolving from the acidification of the ocean." -- Bullough
