With his new print “Palomar Ghost, 2015”, Knuth uses the silhouette of the California Kingsnake against the heavily textured background of his signature flyspeck pattern. To create this pattern, Knuth raises thousands of common houseflies in his studio, feeding them a mixture of sugar and acrylic paint. The flies digest and regurgitate this mixture onto his canvases, leaving millions of “flyspeck” markings in an assortment of colors. The title Palomar Ghost refers to a morph variant for the California King snake that lives around the Palomar Mountains in Southern California.

“John Knuth finds beauty at the edge of panic. Made with signal flares, emergency blankets, smoke and fire, his work plays its haunting chords as the Titanic sinks. Though originally from Minnesota, Knuth fits nicely into the disaster mentality of Los Angeles, an earthquake-‐ prone city that seems to delight in picturing itself at the edge of doom.”
