" When I approached Hercule's first Labour , the Nemean Lion, I knew right away I would not be doing just a lion. I remembered something from the story that many people didn't know ( seems after research, it was just one version of the story). The lion was rumored to steal maidens from local villages. When warriors would arrive at the lion's cave, they would find a injured young woman who would magicially turn into the lion when the warrior got too close and the lion would devour him, leaving the bones for the God of the Underworld, Hades. I found it quite interesting that the lion was invincible, nothing could penetrate it's hide yet Hercules could strangle it with his bare heads so easily. Some would say, he is Zeus's son so his power is unmatched, but I have a different option.
Maybe the lion doesn't transform into a woman, but the woman transforms into a lion. Cursed by Hades, maybe a scorned lover, doomed forever to being his reaper. The background of my piece contains a ancient greek tablet, rumored to be to curse of lovers. She clutches stalks of wheat to her chest, praying to the goddess Demeter(Ceres), the bringer of seasons and giver of gift (wheat also symbolizes growth). I wanted a subtle touch of her breaking down and decided to use the falling of the laurel leaves to get that across ( Laurel leaves symbolize victory). Hercules did not foil her, he did not outmatch her. She LET him kill her. She wanted the agony and suffering to end. I hope she found peace. "
