Description by Tinku:
"Retorno" is a 4-layer hand-cut stencil painting, based on an image taken by 360º (my father).
It took me more than 1000 hours to cut the presumably hundreds of thousands holes that form the image. So far, I have painted five versions using the same stencils, but the series could grow to a maximum of 14 unique pieces (because the smallest holes get blocked and won't last longer and because I prefer not to do big series). Therefore, the painting is not numbered, but it is signed on the back.
"Retorno" is the portrait of a Mam woman met by my father in Guatemala, after her return from a long asylum in Mexico. Her face tells a story that goes beyond this grandmother's individual participation and survival during the Guatemalan Civil War; it tells the story of a people and its heroic resistance against oppression, exploitation, marginalization and discrimination. Because they were, we are.
