The Director General of the United States Constitution Sesquicentennial Commission first proposed the painting shown in this poster in 1937 as part of the 150th anniversary of the Constition. The painting by Christy was first issued as a commemorative poster (as presented here) in fairly limited quantities. After two years of Congressional debate, Christy was commissioned to paint a scene of the Signing as depicted in this poster. The completed 18 x 26 foot canvas was displayed in the Rotunda of the Capitol for 16 months beginning in May, 1940. It was subsequently hung in the east grand stairway of the House, where it may be seen today.
