From Ravi – This piece is a careful composite of slightly differing arts from one culture. The scene, form and composition are in the style of Edo painting from the 1600s but it has the line and print sensibilities of the Ukeyo-e period of the 1800s.
“Warriors in full battle dress are seldom portrayed in Japanese art. A portrait such as this is especially rare in that the sitter is captured just before leaving for battle.†– A passage that, by chance, refers nicely to this print, from the Book “Japan The Shaping of Daimyo Culture, Yoshiaki Shimizu
