Meet Ha Ha:
The work of Ha Ha explores the power of mass media within Australian popular culture. The reality TV phenomena, the religion of sport, criminal lifestyles, get rich quick & instant fame becomes the obsessions, the new virtues of the 21st century.
By using multi-layered stencils of up to 40 layers Ha Ha’s work is a reflection of popular culture. He gets his images direct from the newspaper or from photographing the subject to tell a story of the here & now. Without the aid of a computer, his cutting technique produces lifelike imagery
Ha Ha is a self taught artist who started off by spray painting stencils on the street & has since then graduated to the gallery.
He has been exhibiting for over 8 years he has held 10 solo shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart & Sydney. He is represented by 3 commercial galleries across Australia. His work can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, BHP Billiton, State Library of Victoria, City of Melbourne, Artbank & private collections across Australia, NZ, UK & USA.
Tell us about your new stencil, who are the two characters and why did you choose them?
HAHA: The image is of Aleister Crowley stencil fused with Jesus Christ . It represents the halfway point between god & the devil , between good and bad etc
You've made quite a number of these 'fusion' pieces recently - what are some of the things you've discovered in the process of making them?
HAHA: The stencil fusions are about finding archetypes within relationships and the spaces in between our perception of reality .
Tell us about your process of stencil making, from concept to finished product.
HAHA: I get the image's from "god the internet" then trace the image off the computer screen turning it into a 6 layer stencil without using photo editing tools. Then when I spray the images I combine them together to produce the fusion.
You've been doing a lot of travelling recently, tell us about some of the places you've visited and made art in.
HAHA: Yes traveling is an interesting experience. I really love Berlin, Saigon & San Francisco . Berlin is all about abandoned Soviet military bases which makes for a good canvas . Saigon has great food & like minded creative people and San Francisco is about awesome murals, easy walls to paint, cool people & multinational GMO food poisoning - that tastes great.
What things do you travel with that you couldn't be without?
HAHA: I always take my lucky pearl, my Buddha shrine, my cutting matt & blades .
What is your current art collection like?
HAHA: My art collection is awesome - I have lots of prints and works on paper.
What do you have coming up in 2014?
HAHA: I have an exhibition in Melbourne at Gallery Smith with Mike Chavez & others in May. I’m also in a show called "Now & Then' with James Dodd & Sync, also doing Australian art week in PNG, a solo in Singapore & another group show in NYC.
