“The 55th Annual Cocktail Climb†was inspired by the relaxed glamour of of Palm Springs life – “the one where you have no cares, spend your day sitting by the pool enjoying a Daiquiri or golfing and having Scotch and Seven afterwards,†describes SHAG. “In reality, there is no Annual Cocktail Climb, but in mythological Palm Springs, it is the event of the season.â€
As the inspiration for much of the artist’s work, it was only fitting that Palm Springs be the location for SHAG the store. “In the fifties and sixties people would leave their colonial or spanish houses in Brentwood, drive to their modern vacation homes in Palm Springs, and shed their inhibitions and earth-tone clothing along the way. In the late 1990s that spirit was revived, and people became aware of how important the city was as a convergence of mid-century architecture and the mid-century vacation lifestyle. Because of that, my [art] has been embraced by many people in Palm Springs, and when it came time to open a retail store, Palm Springs was my first and only choice.â€
