AP edition is embossed and signed.Dark Hall Mansion, www.DarkHallMansion.com, is exceptionally proud to debut its new DHM-Seminal Film Series
with its first limited edition print release for the 1927 silent legend, "Metropolis"by none other than
artist Laurent Durieux.
Our limited edition "Metropolis" prints go on sale next Friday, March 29th, 2013 at 9:30 AM PST
on our DHM Store page here: http://www.darkhallmansionstore.com
DHM has had its Film series in development for several years and it is with great enthusiasm that
we're finally able to reveal a print we've been talking to Laurent about creating for us since
Dark Hall Mansion first introduced him to US audiences with his initial American release-DHM's
official Peanuts Valentine's Day prints-back in Feb of 2012.
The undisputed position in cinematic history that "Metropolis" occupies made it almost mandatory
as DHM's first Seminal Film Series release, most notably so due to our silent film obsession, and
our artist of choice had to be Laurent Durieux. "Metropolis" is a particular passion project for
Laurent and one he'd expressed particular interest in working on for DHM since our very first
talks with him on showcasing his work for US and international audiences.
The aim of Dark Hall Mansion's DHM-Seminal Film Series is the very bridging of cinema as art and
art as cinema. To create beautiful prints for some of the most resonant American and international
films, distilling film and imagery while beholden to no specific screening or advertising
obligations. Our aim right from the onset was to honor the tradition of vintage film posters
while simultaneously releasing our artists from its commercial constraints. The single goal,
to create stunning pieces that are intended, from their inception, to be true works of art that
stand alone as just that. The very essence of each film to be distilled and rendered in such
a fashion that anyone, even on the most cursory of viewings, will at once appreciate the prints
for their visual beauty or in the historical context of what made these films so relevant in the
first place.
Key to our approach with DHM's Seminal Film Series is matching artist to film. Nowhere is this
more clearly manifest than in our first pairing of "Metropolis" and Laurent Durieux. The film
that almost bankrupt Germany's UFA Studios, its futuristic vision and singularly intense direction
by pioneering legend Fritz Lang took almost two years to complete and its monumental influence
on artists mining all fields of creative endeavor continues to this very day. Be it Superman
creators Siegel and Shuster's naming of their hero's city or the similarity of George Lucas'
C-3PO and the iconic "Metropolis" robot, the impact of "Metropolis" will be felt for generations
to come.
Perhaps no other element is as striking as the film's overall design and aesthetic and we felt
artist Laurent Durieux was more than up to the task of capturing this film in prints collectors
would find both compelling and striking, prints that quietly demand attention no matter the
context of their display. Ever the craftsman, Laurent's countless layers and detailing are in
synch with the film's rich visual tapestry, and his touch with futuristic detailing is
exceptionally well pursued by collectors. It didn't hurt that he's a huge fan of "Metropolis"
and the film's design and overall look.
He's created two completely different pieces of art for our first DHM-Seminal Film Series
release, each emblematic of "Metropolis," at once echoing the rich tradition of artists before
him yet distinctly stamping the Durieux imprimatur of rich and lush detailing and hyper nuance
that collectors have come to expect from his best work.
