From the artist, Alina Chau: "This is a piece I did for an up-coming show at Gallery Nucleus. Titled: There is no place like home.
The making of this painting is a bit more "rocky" then usual. It takes me three try to get the painting the way I want. While this is not something I never experience before, I haven't had a creative block like this one for a while. I always believe one learn as much from bad painting experience then good painting experience.
very time, I have a big creative block, I often spend time looking back and trying to self analysis and learn from the experience.
This painting start a few week ago, while I am trying to juggle a lot of work and changes. There are all happy positive changes ... I decide to take a new career path; I find a new home for my painting studio ... I am making a lot of new project plans for the year ... all are fun new adventure.
Because of some of these plans, I need finish some of my work ahead of schedule in order to keep up with a few deadlines. And along the way, I kind of rush myself into starting a painting without clear thinking ...
I start this painting with my usual routine, watching Wizard of OZ movie for research. Since this is a tribute show for OZ. I start thinking what I like most about the story, ie. yellow brick road, white witch, munchkin, evil witch ... etc. There are many moments I love ... I know for sure, I want to do something related to yellow brick road and Dorothy's red shoes ... I try to fit everything in one painting. Somehow doing my thought process, I get myself tunnel vision into the "literal" interpretation of the story. I start trying to put every other OZ elements in the paintings, and hope for the best that it would all work out somehow.
But half way through each painting, I start to loss interested in the painting ... I feel there is no heart in the painting ... it feels like a mix of random formal ... It feels force. I try to put every other story element in a painting to tell a story, but I am missing the core of the story.
After the second attempt ... I decide to slow down ... give myself time to think. Why do I gravitate towards yellow brick road, red shoes and white witch and the image of Dorothy's home in Kansas? I love the story moment of Dorothy realize, "There is no place like home." But how am I going to show that self realization and magical moment on a still painting. Then, I realize that moment is not about yellow brick road, red shoes or white witch. That magical moment is about Dorothy. The magic is not coming from the red shoes, it's from Dorothy, she has to have the desire to go home in order for the red shoes and white witch's magic to work ... so I come up with the third and final paining.
Instead of having a stiff image of the yellow brick road in the picture, I decide to dissolve the "yellow brick road" into flowery shapes ... OZ is represented by the lovely flowery patterns, and Kanas is represented by the dry trees ... But even though Kanas may not be as pretty and as magical as OZ, the little house in the distant landscape is nevertheless a warm and happy home."
Created for the following exhibition:
