Per auction.sixtiesposters.com:

A poster for a previously undocumented Doors, Kaleidoscope and West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band show at the L.A.’s Whisky A Go Go. This poster, by former Hell’s Angel and Blue Cheer manager Gut, measures 10 ½ x 16 and is in very good condition, with light moisture rippling and light scuffing. The bottom of the poster lists the Whisky address as “8901 Sunset Strip”—not its actual address (which was on Sunset Blvd.,) but the way it appears on other Whisky posters, handbills and vintage printed pieces.

While the date listed, Saturday November 29 fell in 1969, it is likely that this poster cited the date incorrectly by one month. Had the actual date been October 29, that would put the show in 1966, a much more likely scenario—and explain the scarcity of this poster (listing the wrong month, they would have been scrapped.)

The Doors played the Whisky 86 times during May-August 1966. Signed by Jac Holzman of Elektra Records in early August, they spent the last 10 days of August recording their debut album. Afterward they played Bido Lido’s in Los Angeles, but online databases list no more shows until their first east coast dates, a month at Ondine’s in New York, beginning November 1.

It is likely this poster advertises a last minute warm up date for The Doors’ important New York shows (at the time, they had only played in Southern California and a few dates in Arizona.) Love were booked at the Whisky October 19-30, but according to Whisky experts Corry Arnold and Ross Hannan (who assembled the online database of Whisky shows) the club paid poorly and headliners sometimes skipped a day of an engagement if offered a more lucrative show. It is documented that Love skipped at least one day during these shows, October 22, when they were replaced by Buffalo Springfield. Love were friends and label mates of The Doors; frontman Arthur Lee had urged Elektra head Jac Holzman to sign the band. They certainly would have given a night to The Doors had they asked.

A number of people involved with The Doors and other bands have been consulted about this poster.

Kaleidoscope member Max Buda remembers playing The Whisky with The Doors, but is sure it was earlier than 1969, and feels the 1966 date is likely. West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band biographer Tim Forster agrees, and remembers seeing a copy of this poster many years ago. Elektra founder Jac Holzman and Doors/Kaleidoscope booking agent Todd Schiffman both feel the wrong month/warm up date for New York shows is a likely scenario.

This poster came from the estate of a world class Doors/Jim Morrison collector, which also included numerous original Morrison poetry manuscripts, the manuscripts for Morrison’s first two books, and his handwritten journal from Paris, containing some of the last words he wrote.
