Phil Cushway..."This poster is one of the first that I published, and came right after the Siouxsie and R.E.M. The artwork is by Lee Conklin, famed 60s poster artist, who did a lot of work for the Fillmore/Bill Graham series. He is perhaps best known for his lion/two women black and white image from the Santana album. This poster was done for the Damned, and Lee Conklin had me publish a large William Blake image which Lee then reworked over and over again to produce the artwork for this piece. In the center, as you will notice, is a rose, that alludes to new rose the first punk record put out and was by the Damned. The poster was printed at Tea Lautrec, the legendary printer of many of the original 1960s posters. Tea Lautrec was a different kind of printer, well suited to rock poster artists. At first we used a red paper and printed the black image over this. However, because of the costs, we decided to print the red instead. The red you see here is a hand-mixed color. The richness comes from the fact that it was laid down as a spot color over the entire sheet. When you look at the poster itself, you can also see that a glossed black ink was used for the inside part of the image, and a mat black ink was used for the frame around it. This subtle effect, makes the inside image snap out against the entire piece, adding depth to the overall image.
