During the Summer and Fall of 1965, the hippest area in San Francisco was a 3 block section of Pine St. near the wealthy Pacific Heights on one end and the largest black neighborhood called the Fillmore district. Several Victorian houses held local hippies, folkies, freaks and dope dealers - all bunched together some of these people were Alton Kelley, Chet Helms, Ellen Harmon, Bill Ham, Pete Albin and many others. In fact many of these Pine Streeters helped start the Red Dog Saloon. The Family Dog and in this case the band Big Brother & the Holding Co., Chet Helms started having gatherings in the Victorian basement music room where he lived. The address was 1090 Page St. These weekly jam sessions got more popular until Helms decided to charge 49 cents at the door to try and discourage some of the crowds showing up. Instead it had the opposite effect packing the place more than ever. Some of the musicians started working together more and more, Pete Albin and Jim Gurley. They eventually came up with a name one stoned night... Big Brother & the Holding Co. Offered here is a flyer for one of those jam sessions at 1090 Page St. Note is says, "musicians free."
