Carp originated in China and Eastern Siberia and are now jumping in the rivers of Illinois. How they got there is open to speculation. Most things seem to originate in China - so you would think that they are a far more successful nation than the United States. However, I think that America celebrates success more personally and I presume that the Chinese do not reward their citizens quite so generously.
Carp, however, always appear to me to be a far too exotic fish to simply eat. But if this is so, then the only Carp we should be eating is the rough and tumble Silver Carp (one of which I have just drawn for the New Yorker magazine to appear shortly). But many people eat anything, exotic or not, to assuage their obscene appetites for anything that moves. If it is pretty too- well, the chef can 'dress' the creature in as appetising a way as he - or she, thinks fit. It seems to me that this print is a study of pretty Carp- and although it is merely a drawing- it made me think.
Perhaps we should not be eating 'pretty Carp' at all! I will leave the final choice to the buyer of these prints. I merely make a moral point. I think that the Silver Carp are the eaters- and the rest are to appreciate aesthetically.
