“Namazu (鯰) is a giant catfish who causes earthquakes. He lives in the mud beneath the earth, and is guarded by the god Kashima who restrains the catfish with a stone. When Kashima lets his guard fall, Namazu thrashes about, causing violent earthquakes.”
This watercolor is meant to depict the Kashima deity attempting to regain control over the thrashing Namazu. With luck and a lot of hard work the disaster in Japan will be under control soon.
$15 for each print sold will be donated to the Red Cross for earthquake relief in Japan.
