Star Wars Celebration IV (C4) Los Angeles, CA"This one was a lot of work, but something I always wanted to do. I love Art Nouveau, I love the poster art of Alphonse Mucha, and my DNA has "Star Wars" written on it.

One of the MAIN reasons I did this, however, was timing. C4 was the big 30th anniversary convention for SW, and I guessed that a lotof the other invited artists would do Episode 4 prints, especially the very popular "Big Head Montage". I wanted to steer as far clear of that as possible, then.

I also came home with leftover Han Solo prints I did for C3 the year before, and I learned my lesson. I promised myself: "If this happens again, I'm gonna do chicks or stormtroopers". Slave Leia is one of the major signposts of the cultural landscape that is the affect of Star Wars on popular culture, so..... there you go.

This is one of the few pieces of mine that I have framed and hanging in my home. We got the most ostentatious Victorian-era framejob I could find, and it looks like a real antique!"

"...I'm a lifelong STAR WARS fan. Add to that my love of Art Nouveau in general and Alphonse Mucha in particular. Deciding to combine Slave Leia with the Art Nouveau theatre poster style seemed like a fun combo, and Jabba's world has a lively feel that I could shoehorn some nouveau into.

From there, the elements kinda dictated & art-directed the rest of the assignment. Lotsa sketching, lotsa playing around with color palettes, lotsa searching for Art Nouveau fonts.

The drawing required a lot of linework with no spot blacks, and all forms have a nice bold exterior containment line. The minimal Art Nouveau design elements (I wish there were more!) required all my French curves to ink. Lotsa hand-cramps ensued.

I had to scan the piece in something like 8 sections, and then stitch it back together in Photoshop so that I could color it. Once it was minimally colored, I added some aging and a textured paper pattern to give it a nice antique-y quality."
