For the past 4 years we’ve been lucky enough to make the visuals for Adventures in Modern Music, an experimental music festival organized by Chicago’s Empty Bottle and the UK-based magazine, The Wire. This year, the festival is branching out with help from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and Barcelona-based festival organizers, Sónar, offering up a multiple venue, experimental music bash. This year’s festival will feature everything from the bleak weed metal of Sleep to the haunting chant drones of Lichens, and that’s just one of the nights. Our past posters for this event have been colorful and image driven. This time around, we wanted to try something a little different. Something a little more bleak and hard edged, utilizing the simplicity of screen printing, playing up the classic graphic punch associated with the medium. The black type and image portion of the poster were printed in 3 blacks. Starting with black straight from the can and increasingly growing more transparent with each layer. Using a parchment like paper stock. The transparency of the ink highlighted the small depressions in the paper, reacting with the different materials making up the stock. The end result is a simple yet tactile poster.
