Artist's statement: OBESE reflects upon the big, empty corporate brand, so ubiquitous in American culture. Few images are as conspicuous and pervasive as the KFC Colonel and Shepard Fairey’s Obey Giant. Graphically similar, it felt natural to unify these iconic images. In using the Obey Giant model – a simplified, and often appropriated, illustration juxtaposed with a direct, but ambiguous, message – I’m able to convey an alternate interpretation to the Colonel’s traditional, nostalgic, American mythology. In addition, I serve up the idea that the Obey Giant campaign has become an inflated vehicle for self promotion.
