Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the dirigible or rigid airship, was viewed as the next generation of travel, transport and military technology. The quiet and smooth operation of the vessels and the fact that they could cover long distances with minimal refueling stops and until the Hindenburg disaster- a stellar safety record, were all the traits developing countries like the fledgling USSR were looking for.
The 1928 German Graf Zeppelin inspired huge popularity worldwide. The Soviets found themselves at least as inspired as the huge crowds the Graf Zeppelin was drawing around Europe and the Communist regime under Stalin was anxious to capitalize on what the Russians could accomplish politically with their own Zeppelin.
The Soviets embarked on an ambitious airship manufacturing strategy that would inspire Soviet ideals and promote Communism under Stalin. In reality, very few operable vessels were ever constructed and for the most part, the propaganda imagery, like this poster, created in the interim was just that- propaganda.
