This was originally created for a poster that was never made. France was so quickly invaded by Germany in the early days of WWII that by the time it was ready for printing, France was a lost cause.
Carlu was working in New York at the time he created the painting and the helplessness he must have felt about the invasion and occupation of his home country is reflected in this work.
