About Higgins ink on clayboard
Clayboard is a thick soft white clay surface that absorbs inks without any bleeding. The process is a lot of roughing out the black areas first, hatching with a sharp tool, toning with washes of ink, and back and forth layering; more washes with more hatching working from dark up to light, and pulling out the brightest highlights last. It’s not scratchboard, as this is a lot thicker and is capable of considerably more layering.
