From John:
"Back at the girlfriends in New York 1969, up inside the small multi-room complex for days in the winter we held each other in the small bed in the room. In the mornings I sat in the empty room. The small space was 10' by 10', like a cube, but with a mattress on the floor so her hippie types could drop by to crash. For days and days, I spent mornings sitting on the floor with a pen and pad, and drew my famous Seven Mouse Drawings. High in the ceiling was a single light bulb overhead that lit my drawing paper, but also warmed the room throughout the day. It was winter outside and very cold.
I found myself constructing my seven drawings in my mind as a process: defining the lines a little at a time, no sketches, just one piece of paper at a time, drawing on them with a pen, over a couple of months, just drawing a little each day. I would leave at one o'clock to go up town and go through another experience, and returned to the drawing with ideas in my mind. As I designed my new vernacular, I thought of the drawing as kinetic and called them The City Rat Drawings Inside Walls of Chaos. One day, I thought I had finally finished them, my most amazing drawings to that date. I packed up my equipment with my portfolio and the set of seven drawings, and got up off the floor and left to take another cab to the Kennedy Airport to go see Rick Griffin in San Francisco."
