Since 2005 I've been painting with used motor oil. I use it in my work as a metaphor for Time-- and specifically, for this time period in history. Industrialized civilization in all its parts has been built upon a foundation of oil-- but today that foundation's unsustainable. Locally and globally, we are scrambling to erect safeguards in the form of alternative energy. Now is a time of transition. And a transition is also perceived to be occurring in the U.S. political arena. In the minds of many, the presidential bid of Barack Obama has become symbolic of transition, on a number of fronts. Yet this moment remains a juncture of competing forces. Where the battle lines are drawn over which paradigm will rule tomorrow....
In the series Barack Obama: Made in Motor Oil, I have merged the image (and the symbol) of Obama to my work with used motor oil. Literally and metaphorically, this series serves as an artistic exploration, and visual documentation, of this historic time.
