The Finster Effect
"Being from Georgia, Howard Finster's outsider art influence was ever present during the 80's when his art was "discovered" by Michael Stipe and REM and subsequently used on their albums, as well as, The Talking heads. This style of art is quite popular in these parts and many people sell Finster influenced art at local art fairs and cultural events. It's Appalachia's own. When I was asked to do the new Soul Stew Revival poster for Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, I thought the "Finster effect" would be a cool treatment. My past work for the tour had almost a religious iconic feel to it, so I wanted to do something this time around that would be totally different from the past prints. I was very pleased with the piece. It was all hand drawn in Corel painter using pencil tools in various muted earthy colors. The final print was 8 colors."
