Gil was a famous muralist, illustrator, cartoonist, caricaturist and propaganda and movie poster artist born in Santander, a Northern resort town in Spain.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Gil aligned himself with the Central Committee of the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) faction for whom he produced a number of propaganda posters. POUM was a Trotskyist-Marxist splinter group of the Spanish Communist Party that was eliminated through infighting of the political Left.
Following the war, Gil went into exile in Mexico, where he died in 1972 after producing artwork for some of the most prolific posters of late 20th Century Mexican cinema.
He is now held in high regard in Spain and in 1991, nearly 20 years after his death, an exhibition of his work was held in his hometown of Santander, Spain at the Museo de Bellas Artes.
