One of four known proofs of the key-stone printed in olive green. Very Rare.
Examples of this proof are in the Art Institute, Chicago and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
Lautrec wrote to his mother Aibi on 21 December 1893: “I think I’ll wait till the end of January to go to the lovely town of Aibi. I have an enormous lot to do. Two posters to deliver before January 15, and which are still not started. The artist probably had in mind the poster which was registered at the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris on 29 January 1894 for Victor Joze’s book Babylone d’Allemagne (The German Babylon). Joze had written to the artist asking him to withdraw the poster, as he felt the depiction of a German officer, together with the anti-German tone of the book, would not be tolerated by the police and could cause a diplomatic incident. Nevertheless, on 18 February 1894 Fin de Siecle reported that it was on all the walls, presumably too late for Joze to intervene. To avoid causing the author the same problems, which had arisen over the Reine De Joie poster, Lautrec had paid for the printing himself, so presumably there was nothing to prevent him from displaying it.3-Color Lithograph
