6 color screen print

"Arna and I designed our first Laika poster in December 2014. It was our first collaboration and we made it to show at the Denver bar and restaurant Sputnik. We both worked on all aspects of the poster concept, drawings, and layout.

The original print was 2 feet wide x 3 tall, so Arna had to print the top half and the bottom half separately (5 colors each). We only printed 25 posters.

After many inquiries about those original Laika prints, we designed a new 18" x 24" poster with the same look and feel and printed 185 of them.

This new poster is a 6-color, 18" x 24" screen print and each print is signed and numbered. Like the first poster, the new design was influenced by Soviet-era propaganda posters and depictions of Mary of Guadalupe.

We are both really against using animals in testing for humans, or for entertainment, or keeping them in cages at all. Laika's situation was particularly heartbreaking”she died in orbit from overheating and stress. Her spacecraft was not even designed to get her back to earth alive. Oleg Gazenko, one of the Soviet scientists who sent her into space said, 'work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.'" -- Zupa
