Charlie Brown: Hey, maybe this is the start of a trend. Maybe this is a whole new trend for old Charlie Brown.
Maybe this is the start of something big! Maybe next year I'll get a whole bunch of valentines!
Maybe next year I'll need three briefcases instead of two!

=============
Jan 31, 2014

Maybe, Charlie, just maybe, so you better bring along those briefcases to hold all your valentines! We certainly feel you're due!!

Dark Hall Mansion, www.DarkHallMansion.com, is so very happy to share our officially licensed 2014 Peanuts print for Charles M. Schulz's ode to semi-unrequited love, the 1975 classic, “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown.” On sale next Wed, February 5, 2014, at a random time between 9:30 AM PST and 11:30 AM PST and arriving just in time for that special Valentine's Day gift or just to treat yourself.

Dark Hall Mansion's guest artist for this year's "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" is the extremely talented Ms. Lorelay Bove, who needs little introduction aside a Googling of her name. Born in Spain and having begun her career with Pixar, she now works for the Walt Disney Animation Studios and has been involved in visual development, color characters and more on "The Princess and the Frog," as well as having worked on "Tangled," "Winnie the Pooh," and handling lead designer duties in sugar rush from "Wreck it Ralph." However, it's her striking personal artwork and brilliant line that drew us to her work, her stylish and gorgeous line work so evocative of legendary illustrator, Rene Gruau, whose work shaped high fashion, magazine covers, and film poster work.

From Lorelay:
"I loved watching old classic Hollywood films, and Disney animated cartoons when I was young, and that still reflects in my art today. I usually like to paint stories, my experiences, and my travels. I think is fun to capture the sincerity and feeling in my happenings in life and translate into my work, because it makes it more real, and the audience will connect to the art work, and that’s very fulfilling, when the audience giggles or understands it, then it makes me happy and it makes me want to experience life even more, so I can share through my paintings. Life is what inspires me."

Charlie: Did you see my name on any of those valentines?
Schroeder: No, I haven't been paying any attention. What's that briefcase for?
Charlie Brown: Well, in case I get a lot of valentines, I'll want to have something to carry them in.

Lorelay's beautiful painterly approach is at once classic and altogether her own. Her subtle use of color and gentle pastel underscores Schulz's story and emotions perfectly. What is there to say? She's beautifully captured the optimism and hope in us all, to love, be loved, the Charlie we all hold within as we dutifully carry our briefcases forward into love, and, its sometime heavy weight as we trudge back, briefcases a little lighter, our hearts perhaps a little broken but ever hopeful and faithful that next time it'll be different. It's that hope, with a little help from everyone's favorite Cupid beagle, that Lorelay's sought to gently render with a deceptively light touch and a subtle heart shaped cloud or two.

But make no mistake, "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" is a profound meditation on all that is love, and for those that don't know this Schulz gem, we cannot urge you enough to see the dark and light of Charlie Schulz's brilliance at work in this masterpiece. Lorelay has done this treat justice with the bitter bite that comes from unrequited, or simply frustrated, love; Linus' passionate refutation of all that is Valentine's day (at least momentarily) perfectly captures the frustration in us all as we invest, heart and allowance, for that perfect gift, for that perfect someone, only to find ourselves all too soon hurling candies off a bridge as our intendeds drive off without so much as a passing awareness of the depth of our feelings.

Oh well, at least someone appreciated Linus's Valentine's Day purchase, as hurled candies land one by one into a most receptive and smiling Snoopy and Woodstock! ;)

Linus: I spent all my money. I made a fool of myself.
(Linus begins throwing chocolates off the bridge and out of sight)
Linus: This one is for love! And this one is for Valentine's! This one is for ro-mance! This one is for Elizabeth Barrett Browning! This is for "How do I love thee!" This is for...
(We see Snoopy and Woodstock catching and eating the chocolates as Linus throws them!)

Not to be outdone is Lorelay's exquisite and powerful Variant for this year's "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" print. Stunningly rendered with immediacy and intensity that belies its moody and evocative gentleness, we find the viewer left to reflect on Charlie, his briefcase to hold all the valentines he's hoping to receive, and the very nature of love itself. Lovely jazz blue hearts set a powerful mood reflective of our place in the world, our singularity, the utter desire, fear and need to connect, a single unflappable heart, undeterred, unbowed. That, is Charlie Brown.

Charlie Brown: I guess I let Schroeder down, but it was my first valentine, you know.
Linus van Pelt: I didn't do too well, either. Miss Othmar went off with her boyfriend. She never even knew I had a Valentine's gift for her.
Charlie Brown: Well, maybe it wasn't a total flop for me. At least they were showing a little thought for me, even if it was a used valentine. At least they care a little bit about me. Hey, maybe this is the start of a trend. Maybe this is a whole new trend for old Charlie Brown. Maybe this is the start of something big! Maybe next year I'll get a whole bunch of valentines! Maybe next year I'll need three briefcases instead of two! Maybe next year I'll even...

Linus: Happy Valentine's Day, Charlie Brown.
