"EARTH - earthly desire’s and the struggles to survive.
‘Earth’ features a cross section of a desert landscape. Several native endangered animals from the CA desert are engaged in an evolutionary balance between predator and prey. This idea came to me after several small mammal surveys with biologists over the last five years throughout the CA Central Valley and Desert National Wildlife range in Nevada.
I painted the 5 th elemental geometric shape of earth as a cube in a subtle palette of pastel colors of a desert dawn.
The small and secretive San Joaquin Kit Fox is considered one of the most endangered animals in CA. They’re also an ‘umbrella species’ meaning efforts to save the species will benefit other native plants and animals. San Joaquin kit foxes can use more than 60 different dens over the course of a year, keeping their predators, like coyotes and humans, guessing. The Kit Fox waits, one eye open, for the Kangaroo rat to emerge from it’s Den. Inside the tunnel, another endangered species endemic to California, The mother Giant Kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ingens) and her juvenile, have adapted their own survival strategy to escape from the predator. They have developed a clever escape plan through an elaborate burrow system. B planning ahead, they can wait in the darkness for a long time feeding on the seeds packed into the burrows walls. I also included examples of native insects and plants I’ve seen on my trips in the field across CA deserts to Nevada, such as the Chambers’ twinpod (Physaria chambersii), a rare and fascinating plant in the mustard family. This is a small universal story of the evolutionary race, earthly desire’s and the struggle to survive in the solid physical world. Like an enduring Aesop Fable, the clever grit it takes to defend, protect, and eat or be eaten."
