"Unquestionably, one of the great poster designs of all time! Certainly, this is the greatest war related movie poster ever created. It was made to advertise the first motion pictures ever seen of a war. The US government sent cameraman overseas to the front in the European war to capture the action. Public interest was as sky high, as you'd expect for such a spectacle. The United States hired one of the best illustrators working at the time, Louis Fancher, to design this magnificent stone litho. I'd say breathtaking is an understatement in describing the final result he achieved. It's a work that's sophisticated, vintage, and, timeless all at the same time. As a movie poster it's quintessential. As a documentary poster, it has no equal. Talk about historic; it gets no better than this!

This poster was well regarded from its inception back in 1917. Back then, posters were at the peak of their importance as a medium - before the advent of TV, or even radio. I've posted a photo that I found of a prestigious committee of poster artists, illustrators, and painters taken in New York City back in 1917. This photo was reproduced in James Fraser's 1991 hardbound book, "The American Billboard - 100 Years." -mrs.miniver (ebay i.d)
